To improve healthcare services for her constituents, Aguti Sarah Nyangkori, the Woman Member of Parliament (WMP) for Dokolo district, purchased a brand-new ambulance for shs200 million.
The ambulance is intended to address critical healthcare challenges, particularly maternal mortality, which has been a recurring problem in the district due to a lack of emergency services.
MP Aguti said this is a personal initiative, and she has committed her monthly salary to purchasing the ambulance.
In particular, for laboring women who frequently face life-threatening circumstances because of delayed access to healthcare services, this gesture is part of her continuous efforts to give back to the community and ensure timely medical interventions.
Dokolo district, like many rural areas in Uganda, has faced inadequate healthcare infrastructure and resources.
The district has only one government-provided ambulance, which is insufficient to cover the vast area, including Dokolo South and North, which include several sub-counties and town councils such as Bata, Agwata, Okwongo Dul, Kwera, Adok, Adeknino, and the Dokolo Town Council.
According to MP Aguti, the ambulance will be stationed in four locations: Adok Sub County, Okwalo Ngwen Market, AngwecIbange Primary School, and, eventually, Kangai Health Centre 3.
She emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, “As the Dokolo Woman Member of Parliament, this ambulance is my way of giving back to the community. It will help save lives, especially women during childbirth, and address other emergency medical cases that require immediate attention.”
Maternal mortality remains a pressing issue in Uganda, with many women losing their lives during childbirth due to delays in accessing healthcare services.
The new ambulance is expected to significantly reduce delays, ensuring that pregnant women and other patients receive prompt medical care.
On March 22, 2025, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President, James Jimmy Michael Akena Obote, along with other party leaders and community stakeholders, will officially launch the ambulance.
The launch marks the start of the ambulance’s operational duties, which will include serving remote areas of the district that are frequently difficult to access.
Since winning the Dokolo by-election, Aguti has built a reputation as a dedicated and compassionate leader.
She has been actively involved in various community development initiatives, including supporting the education of Primary Seven candidates, contributing to church activities, and empowering local community groups.
Her latest contribution of the ambulance further cements her commitment to improving the lives of her constituents. The support has been widely praised by community members, who see it as a lifeline that will address critical gaps in healthcare delivery.
The addition of the new ambulance is expected to complement the existing government-provided ambulance, ensuring that emergency cases are handled more efficiently.
As the people of Dokolo district await the ambulance’s official launch, there is renewed optimism that this intervention will save lives, reduce maternal mortality, and improve overall healthcare outcomes in the sub-region.
