709 out of 19,763 tested positive for HIV in Pader

Pader I Pader district in East Acholi has recorded 709 new HIV/AIDS – tndNews understands.

The new infections were out of 19,763 who were tested for the virus.

The district HIV/AIDS Focal Point Person Lam Betty has confirmed. Lam also said a total of 8,040 patients were enrolled on medication in 2022/2023 and the recorded (new) cases were only 300.

In the year 2021/2022, she revealed that there were 1,114 new cases. The HIV/AIDS prevalence in Pader is now at 8.9 per cent based on the recent report, according to Lam.

Pader district was previously ranked at 12 percent which was higher than the national ranking at 5.4 percent.

Meanwhile, Dr Dominic Okidi, a senior health officer in the district, said communities have abandoned condom use.

He wants the established functioning committee to sensitize communities and distribute free condoms to help reduce the spread of the virus in Pader.
