The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Lira, Lawrence Egole, has issued a strong warning against individuals using other people’s National Identification Numbers (NINs) for personal gain.
The RCC issued a warning on March 3, 2025, from Lira Regional Referral Hospital, condemning the practice.
“It has come to our attention that some individuals/politicians are using other people’s NINs in exchange for gifts and access services, benefits, and even to commit crimes,” the RCC said.
Egole warned that anyone caught using someone else’s NIN would face severe consequences, including prosecution.
“We will not tolerate this kind of behavior,” he said.
Egole, the head of the city’s security committee, added, “We need the public’s help to combat this problem, and we encourage anyone who has information about NIN misuse to come forward.”
The warning comes as the government works to strengthen the national identification system and combat identity theft and other types of fraud.
Egole advised National Identity Card holders to keep their NINs confidential and only share them with authorized individuals or organizations.
“Your NIN is a valuable piece of information, and you should treat it with care,” he stated.
Additionally, he urged everyone to notify NIRA right away if their national identification was stolen or lost.
“If you lose your national ID or if it is stolen, report it to NIRA right away,” the RCC said.
By taking these steps, Egole believes the public can help prevent NIN misuse and protect their personal information.
