Akello Hellen’s murder: Husband Oyuru Moses among prime suspects, police say

Lira City | Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Akello Hellen, 28, who was shot on February 24, 2025, at Corner Boroboro, Opila village, Angwetangwet Cell, Lira City East Division.

The suspects include Oyuru Moses, the deceased’s husband, Okello Denis, and Atyang Barbra. Their arrests come after a thorough investigation by police, who also discovered counterfeit money, fake gold, and other items associated with the crime.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Regional Police PRO for the North Kyoga, the suspects are being held to aid in ongoing investigations.

During a search of Oyuru Moses’ home, police discovered $40,300 in counterfeit US dollars and 7,950,000 in counterfeit Ugandan shilling notes.

Additionally, fake gold, a gold weighing scale, and the skin of a hedgehog animal were discovered at the suspect’s home. Authorities are working with the Bank of Uganda and the US Embassy to verify the counterfeit currency.

According to SP Okema, three cartridges and one projectile were found at the crime scene. On February 28, these were sent to the Forensics Directorate for examination.

Both the deceased and the suspects’ mobile phones were submitted for forensic examination in order to trace communications related to the incident.

SP Okema also revealed that one of the suspects, Atyang Barbra, was arrested on March 1, 2025, on allegations that she stole shs1.9 million from the deceased following the shooting.

During her arrest, police discovered shs220,000 stained with suspected blood, as well as bunches of keys and the deceased’s handbag, buried in a polythene bag in front of her rented house.

The blood-stained money has also been sent for analysis to determine its involvement in the crime.

The police have pledged to continue their search for the alleged murder weapon and apprehend any other suspects who remain at large.

“As police, we pledge our commitment to ensuring that justice prevails in this case,” SP Okema stated.

The murder of Akello Hellen has sent shockwaves through Lira City, with residents demanding swift justice.

Police say they are still looking for the murder weapon and other suspects who remain at large.

“The public is urged to come forward with any information that may help the investigation. “Updates will be provided as the case progresses,” stated SP Okema.
