Overloaded sugarcane truck kills one: 2 admitted at Buwenge

A tragic road crash on Wednesday night left two people seriously injured and one dead. This incident happened when the truck overturned along the Jinja-Kamuli road in Buwenge Town Council.

The vehicle, bearing registration number UBD 023V, lost control and rolled several times, leaving its crew members in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses say the truck, which was heavily loaded with sugarcane and heading towards Jinja, was moving at a high speed before the driver seemingly lost control. The incident happened at around 9:00 pm.

The two injured individuals have been identified as Zefa Kazingiri, 30, and Ibra Wadembule, all residents of Buyengo Town Council in Jinja District. The deceased who succumbed to injuries has also been identified as Byansi Sulaiman, 25.

Police’s preliminary findings state that the injured were in the truck’s cabin when it overturned, and they sustained severe injuries from the impact. The driver of the truck, however, fled the scene and remains at large.

Soon, Buwenge Central Police Station (CPS) traffic officers arrived swiftly at the scene, and provided immediate assistance.

The injured were rushed to Buwenge Health Centre IV for emergency medical care.

SP James Mubi, PRO for Kiira Regional Police has issued a statement regarding the accident emphasizing the importance of adhering to road safety regulations.

He also urged drivers to observe speed limits and avoid reckless maneuvers such as unnecessary overtaking.

SP Mubi further reassured the public that the region’s traffic police units, both static and mobile, are actively enforcing safety measures to curb the increasing road carnage.

“Drivers must be vigilant and responsible while on the road to prevent such unfortunate incidents. The enforcement of speed limits and road safety guidelines remains a priority,” he stated.

Road crashes remain a significant concern in Uganda, with high-speed driving, reckless overtaking, and mechanical failures contributing to frequent crashes. The Jinja-Kamuli road, a busy highway connecting Jinja to various trading centers and sugarcane plantations, has witnessed numerous accidents in the past.

Traffic reports indicate that heavy trucks, especially those transporting sugarcane, often pose risks due to their size, weight, and sometimes poor mechanical condition. Drivers, often pressured to meet tight delivery schedules, may resort to speeding, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Police have consistently warned about the dangers of overloading and poor vehicle maintenance, but compliance remains a challenge.

The government, in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force and road safety organizations, has been working to address the increasing cases of road accidents. Initiatives such as the establishment of speed monitoring systems, improved road signage, and driver sensitization programs have been introduced.

However, challenges persist. Corruption among traffic officers, poor road infrastructure, and limited enforcement of safety measures have hindered progress. Road users often complain about lax enforcement, with some drivers managing to evade penalties even after violating traffic rules.

Transport and road safety advocates continue to push for more stringent policies, including compulsory roadworthiness tests for heavy trucks and stricter licensing requirements for commercial drivers.

The Buwenge crash serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for better traffic discipline and improved road safety enforcement. The absence of the truck driver at the scene raises questions about accountability and highlights the need for enhanced driver responsibility.

Residents and local authorities are urging the police to intensify their search for the fugitive driver and ensure that justice is served. “He must be held accountable for his actions. Leaving injured people behind and running away is unacceptable,” one resident remarked.

SP James Mubi reaffirmed the police’s commitment to tracking down the driver and ensuring that legal action is taken.

“We are investigating the circumstances leading to this crash and will not rest until the driver is brought to justice. Every road user must be responsible and accountable for their actions,” he emphasized.

As the two victims continue their recovery, the focus now shifts to preventing similar tragedies in the future. Road users, especially drivers of heavy commercial vehicles, must take responsibility for ensuring safety on the roads.

With increasing traffic and commercial activity along the Jinja-Kamuli road, authorities must act decisively to protect road users and prevent further loss of lives or injuries.

The safety of travelers, pedestrians, and drivers alike depends on strict adherence to traffic regulations and improved enforcement mechanisms.
