NRM SG Todwong mourns “a strong and selfless cadre” Tonny Oteng

Lira | Richard Todwong, the General Secretary of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), paid tribute to the late NRM cadre Tonny Oteng on Tuesday at a heartfelt burial ceremony in Abolet village, Alebere parish, Itek sub-county, Lira district.

Todwong was represented by Sam Engola, senior presidential advisor on Lango affairs, who delivered the message to the family and mourners.

Oteng was an active member of the NRM and a community leader. He was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the party and his tireless efforts in mobilizing support at the grassroots level.

His death has created a void in the sub-region’s political and social fabric, as evidenced by the large turnout of mourners, which included party officials, local leaders, and community members.

In his message, Todwong described Oteng as a “strong and selfless NRM cadre” who dedicated his life to serving the party and the Lira community. He emphasized Oteng’s role in promoting the NRM ideology and fostering unity within the community.

“Tonny Oteng was a true patriot and a pillar of the NRM in Lira. His contributions to the party and his community will never be forgotten. We have lost a great comrade, but his legacy will continue to inspire us,” Todwong’s message read.

Similar to Todwong, Sam Engola urged NRM members to follow Oteng’s example of selflessness and dedication. He also called for unity within the party, stressing the importance of working together to achieve the party’s goals.

Family members, friends, and political associates delivered emotional speeches at the send-off ceremony, praising Oteng for his humility, hard work, and dedication to service. Local leaders also highlighted his role in advocating for development projects in Itek Sub County and beyond.

His legacy as a devoted party cadre and community leader lives on in many people’s hearts, and his contributions to the NRM and his community will undoubtedly inspire future generations, according to party officials.

Rev. Vincent Okullu of the Bar preached to the mourners, quoting the Book of Proverbs verses 4-9 and emphasising the inevitability of death. He encouraged the public to regularly visit health facilities for check-ups, seeking guidance from health experts.

Lemo Tom Edward, former LC3 chairperson, remembered Oteng as a dedicated NRM supporter who contributed significantly to the NRM government. He noted that both Janet Oteng and their family were staunch supporters of the NRM.

His wife served as the NRM chairperson for both Itek sub-county and Bar sub-county, where the late Oteng had previously moved a motion in 2011 to facilitate the division of Bar sub-county into two.

In his address to the mourners, Lira District LC5 RCM Okello Orik urged the community to thank the NRM government for the current state of peace throughout the country. Additionally, he stressed the value of a good education for kids and urged parents to make sure their kids go to school.

Lillian Eyal, RDC of Lira District, spoke about the importance of youth and stakeholders participating in government programs like PDM and Emyooga to help people get out of poverty.

“While we mourn the loss of Oteng, who passed away at the age of 57, I believe we will find someone to carry on his legacy.”
