Court martial

Pader | Some Ugandan civilians have had the opportunity to wear authentic military uniforms or keep armed forces supplies in their possession.

These stores are frequently acquired illegally. The Court Martial has prosecuted dozens of people for this crime. Nevertheless, the desire to possess it persists.

Colonel David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5 Division, has issued a warning to civilians in the Acholi sub-region who are illegally in possession of military stores to return them to security authorities.

Colonel Opeero issued this warning as he opened the court sitting at the 5 Division headquarters in Acholi Pii barracks, Pader district.

Meanwhile, the 5 Division Court Martial has remanded nine civilians to Kinene government prison for illegally possessing weapons and government stores.

The accused include Lukwanga Bina Issa Ojara, Oyagi Alex, Okello Jimmy, Oke Bale Jacob, Onywala Thomas; Kilam Moses Kelly, Huma Lilian, Onzima Hamiou, and Mbwana Awali.

Some of the accused have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentence.

At the same court session, Colonel Peter Musherure, the Court Martial Chairperson and Division Operations and Training Officer, sentenced four soldiers to two years in prison for desertion, in violation of Section 144 of the UPDF Act of 2005.

Colonel Musherure emphasised that the UPDF will continue to uphold its ethos and values, which promote discipline and dedication among soldiers.

He also stated that the UPDF and its sister security agencies are committed to conducting ongoing operations to recover all illegal firearms from criminals.
