In order to get justice for the alleged torture and humiliation inflicted by Mama Supermarket employees, the Community Development Officer (CDO) of Agali sub-county in Lira district has gone to the police.
Mama supermarket is located in Lira City, opposite Aputi Road.
A video circulating on social media shows CDO Judith Abonyo being assaulted by a woman identified as a supermarket cashier. She accuses Abonyo of theft, claiming she tried to flee with stolen goods.
According to reports, the elderly woman, who is physically impaired, entered Mama, selected a few items, and then proceeded to the counter to pay.
Because of the large number of customers, the cashier lost track of Abonyo and began chasing her down, shouting and accusing her of theft.
A security guard apprehended her and took her to a back room, where she was severely beaten and forced to pose with a few items they claimed she had stolen.
Mama is renowned for her photography, and their “wall of shame” at the entrance features pictures of suspected thieves.
Staff at the supermarket claimed that Abonyo had previously stolen a shs50,000 water bottle and had returned to steal again, this time taking items worth shs200,000.
They humiliated an impaired mama without justification.
Abonyo has reported an assault at Lira Central Police Station, with reference number SDRef/49/20/01/2025, in an effort to obtain justice.
Since the incident became public, the Mama supermarket has faced widespread criticism, with dozens believing Mama Abonyo “we know cannot steal.”
tndNews understands that some lawyers have approached the CDO for legal assistance, believing that Mama, the grocery provider, must be held accountable.
