Amb. Dickson Ogwang Okul, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Lango Cultural Foundation, paid a moving tribute to the late Judy Adoko during her inaugural memorial lecture.
Judy served as the Founding Director of the Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU) from 2003 to 2019. She died on March 5, 2023.
In her honour, LEMU and the Makerere Institute of Social Research hosted the inaugural “Judy Adoko Memorial Lecture” on Wednesday, which was a huge success. Professor Mahmood Mamdani was the guest speaker.
On behalf of the Lango Cultural Foundation and Won Nyaci Yosam Odur Ebii, Minister Ogwang remembered Judy, the Foundation’s Cabinet Secretary.
Speaking of Judy’s legacy, he emphasised her commitment to justice, advocacy for the Lango people, and significant contributions to the LCF.
On the power of collaboration, he said Judy emphasized its importance, noting how Judy, born and raised in Lango, was brought into the LCF fold through the initiative of American individuals, Sam Casey and an organization, Advocates International.
Ogwang used the analogy of “secret ingredients” and “unexpected but satisfying combos” to illustrate the international connection Judy had.
Judy’s commitment to land rights was immense, Minister Ogwang said, praising her dedication to promoting an agrarian system based on customary traditions, challenging the torrent system.
Additionally, he highlighted her tireless work in advocating for equitable land distribution among all Lango people, regardless of gender or birth status.
The LCF Foreign Affairs Minister concluded his speech by urging attendees to remember Judy’s laughter, strength, and unwavering love for the Lango people. He stressed the importance of carrying on her legacy, upholding the values she championed and striving for a better Lango.
Attendees reacted enthusiastically to his speech, with many praising its powerful and poignant delivery.
Minister Ogwang’s speech was a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to serving her people.
His words are a reminder of Judy’s legacy and a call to action for the LCF to continue her work towards a more just and prosperous Lango.
