As the founding director of the Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU), Judy Adoko served from 2003 to 2019.
She was enthusiastic about land rights, food, and humanity. LEMU and the Makerere Institute of Social Research have organized the first “Judy Adoko Memorial Lecture.”
The February 26 event will focus on customary land tenure in Uganda and how to keep the conversation alive!
The memorial theme will be the land question in Uganda, and Prof. Mahmood Mamdani of Columbia University will be the guest speaker.
Judy left a message with LEMU prior to her death in March 2023. She said, “LEMU remains the closest NGO to community issues – do not therefore let LEMU die after I leave.”
Throughout her work with LEMU and partners, she believed that customary land should be treated equally with all other tenure systems.
“In fight for equality between customary land tenure and other tenures, Judy was actually fighting for the freedom of Africans people, to govern their land using social norms and customs as opposed to purely depending on state laws whose interpretations are sometimes alien to the real life situations of African people,” LEMU’s Executive Director, Dr Theresa Auma said while mourning Judy in 2023.
By the time she died, LEMU was celebrating its twentieth anniversary as an organization.
“Judy left a remarkable legacy that will live for generations to come,” Dr Theresa added.
Meanwhile, the memorial lecture begins at 2pm to 5pm on Wednesday.
