The LIDUPED Foundation Uganda has held a distribution ceremony for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Lango sub-region, following a donation from Mission for Disability Uganda.
The donation, which targets over 200 individuals, includes various mobility and assistive devices designed to improve their lives in diverse ways.
Valued at over shs100 million, the donations were handed over by the evangelistic wing of Mission for Disability Uganda at the LIDUPED Foundation headquarters in Lira City.
Approximately 60 wheelchairs, over 50 pairs of crutches, white canes for the visually impaired, portable toilets, and specialized seats for children with cerebral palsy to help manage posture and pain.
Jasper Opio, the Executive Director of LIDUPED Foundation Uganda, stated that this exercise is part of a series of distributions supported by Mission for Disability.
He noted that these devices will help PWDs access education and government programs, adding that more support is needed to empower PWDs to transform their lives and contribute to Uganda’s development.
Christen Kokonya, the Deputy Executive Director in charge of Coordination at Mission for Disability Uganda based in Busia district, mentioned that while their support has previously focused on Eastern and Central Uganda, they have now expanded to Northern Uganda.
After recently providing support in Gulu, they have now extended their reach to the Lango sub-region.
Kokonya urged the beneficiaries to ensure the devices are used properly and maintained well to serve them for a long time.
Susan Apili, a female representative for PWDs in Kwania district, noted that her district received about seven wheelchairs.
She emphasized that these items must be used for their intended purpose and warned against selling them to others, a vice that has been reported in the past.
Beneficiaries, including Leone Ayo from Baritek, Inomo (Kwania); Felix Tito Ayer from Toopeyero, Inomo (Kwania); Gwido Obong from Bar-punu, Okwerodot (Kole); and Samuel Bua from Telela, Lira City West, expressed great joy and gratitude for the life-changing support provided by the organization.
