Military court found lawyer Eron Kizza guilty of contempt of court

Makindye |The military court has sentenced Eron Kizza, a city lawyer, to nine months in prison.

Kizza, a key member of Dr. Kizza Besigye’s legal team, was arrested on Tuesday by military personnel on the court grounds in Makindye, Kampala.

At 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Kizza, using his verified X handle, posted a video of himself and other supporters and friends of veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye attempting to enter the courtroom.

“Having trouble to enter this Kangaroo military tribunal,” he wrote. “Court scheduled for 10:00am. We are still being blocked from entering the gate of the Makindye-based Kangaroo General Court Martial. Shambolic.”

Kizza was found “guilty of contempt of court” by the General Court Martial and sentenced to 9 months. He will serve his term from Kitalya government prison.

He will have no opportunity to fight for his clients, Dr Besigye and Obed Lutale.

Meanwhile, Besigye’s legal team had earlier informed the court that they would be unable to proceed due to the arrest of one of their members, Kizza.

Senior Counsel Martha Karua, the lead counsel for Dr. Besigye and his co-accused, requested more time next week.

Karua told the court that they had been subjected to a variety of conditions, leaving them exhausted and unable to adequately represent their clients.

The court agreed and moved the hearing to January 13, 2025.

Dr. Besigye was arrested in Nairobi last year, driven to Kampala, and later detained by the military for crimes he has yet to admit to.
