Woman, 80, murdered for raising an alarm while naked at the grave

Lake Kyoga

Apac | An 80-year-old woman was murdered on December 19 at 1 a.m. in Obani village, Akere parish, Apac district, according to police.

Two men have already been arrested as key suspects.

The crime was reported to police by Omoko Tonny, 42, who is the chairman LC1 of Obani.

The suspects in custody are Okello Sivirino, 62, a peasant farmer from Odal Owang cell, Ayabi town council in Kwania district, and Owiny Jaspher, 23, a peasant farmer from Obani village.

North Kyoga Region Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema said it’s alleged that on the night of December 19, 2024, at around 1am, one Apio Catherine, now a deceased, while naked went to the grave of the late Ogwal Robert and started making alarm.

When the late Ogwal’s children heard the alarm, they went out to find the old woman on the grave. “They picked her up, assaulted and beat her, and she became unconscious and died later,” SP Okema explained.

A team of police officers from homicide and SOCO from Apac CPS responded to the scene and confirmed the incident, he said, adding that “statements were recorded from relevant witnesses.”

Apio’s body was picked up and transported to Apac General Hospital for postmortem.

“Two suspects, as mentioned above, have been arrested to aid investigations.

This is yet another unfortunate incident, bringing the total number of murder cases registered in the North Kyoga Region to six in just three days.

“We continue to condemn acts of torture and people taking the law into their own hands by killing in such an inhumane way,” the PRO stated.

“We shall do all it takes for justice to prevail and leave no stone unturned,” he vowed.
