Lira |Following approval from the Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, the Lira Catholic Diocese’s social communications department established a six-member commission.
During a special mass led by Vicar General, Monsignor Valente Innocent Opio, on behalf of Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino, the commissioners were officially commissioned.
The Diocesan Communications Secretary, Rev. Fr. Isaac Ojok, introduced them to the gathering.
On December 21, 2024, each commissioner vowed to serve the Catholic Church with integrity during a special mass held at the famous Ordination Ground.
Prior to taking their oaths of office, Monsignor Valente encouraged the commissioners to strengthen and promote the Catholic Church’s teachings and mission through effective and responsible communication.
The commission consists of Bongo Jimmy, Ms. Ebong Doreen, Bonny Otim, and Nancy Atim Lapul.
Others include Byrian Ocen and Sister Sylvia Atim. Meanwhile, Fr. Isaac Ojok will serve as the secretary.

In his homily, Monsignor Valente challenged communicators on the aspect of sharing the good news, reminding them of Pope Francis’ World Communication Sunday theme for next year: “Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts.”
Noting the element of service, he emphasized that the theme encourages Christians to convey God’s message while also communicating in the new year with Christ’s love and mercy, which fosters joy, love, and peace.
“Today, we are celebrating communication for the good and bad”, he added.
He did, however, warn that what is in the heart will eventually be expressed through speech, which can lead to confusion, division, and segregation if tainted by negative thoughts.
Mr. Felix Dolly Ayo, chairperson of the Central Organizing Committee for the special prayer, confirmed that the Lira Catholic Diocese’s communication department is seeking financial support to improve its effectiveness.
He mentioned that hopeful initiatives are being developed to strengthen the communication department at the grassroots level.
To address these challenges, Fr. Isaac Ojok confirmed plans to engage various communities, including the business community, to lead resource mobilization aimed at strengthening the Diocese’s communication department.
“The Diocese intends to organize a fundraising event to mobilize funds from different communities”, said Fr. Ojok.
The social communications department has now outlined various communication channels within the social communication department of Lira Diocese, which encompass Uganda Catholic Television, Radio Wa, a magazine, and online content.
During the same mass, a brief fundraising session was held, with shs3 million raised to officially kick off the Diocese’s communication department’s support campaign.
