Lira City Council Football Club (LCC FC) began the 2024/2025 season of the Northern Regional League with a big win.
Drawn in the Rhino Group, the Council defeated last season’s champions, Northern Gateway SC, 3-1.
The derby, held at the lively Rhino Park (Lango College Playground), drew a large crowd of spectators eager to witness the fierce battle for city supremacy.
The match began with LCC FC demonstrating their intent early on. Just 12 minutes into the game, midfielder Patrick Alany opened the scoring, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. But the opposition reacted resolutely, and Daniel Ojok equalized just before halftime.
The second half was marked by increased tension, as both teams fought for dominance. Odongo Brian, LCC FC’s striker, broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute.
After a brilliant run by winger Emmanuel Okeng, who skillfully manoeuvred past Gateway defenders, Odongo scored to make it 2-1 for the home team.
LCC FC doubled their lead moments later when Patrick Alany converted his second penalty. Alany scored after Emmanuel Okeng was fouled in the penalty area, bringing the game to 3-1.
This high-scoring match contrasts sharply with last season’s encounters, in which both teams won their home games by a single goal.
The rejuvenation of LCC FC has captured the attention of local football fans, particularly following the appointment of renowned coach Dan Ogwal Engwedo.
Ogwal is well-known for his talent development, and his experience is regarded as a valuable asset to the club.
During his unveiling, he expressed a bold ambition to remain unbeaten, a feat they accomplished the previous season under coach Ronald Okello, but fell short in the playoffs against Young Elephants FC.
Northern Gateway SC, which finished first in the league last season, struggled to meet the expectations placed on them. With a new coaching duo of Anthony Odongo Gigs and Isaac Ojok Alito, fans were left wanting more in this first match.
On Saturday, November 9, 2024, Lira City Council FC will travel more than 80 kilometers to face Red Devo Namesale FC in the Amolatar district.
Northern Gateway SC will welcome Amati FC from the Oyam district.
