Agago | The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has condemned the heinous and regrettable incident in which a soldier, Private Ameny Bonny of the 01 Commando Battalion, fatally shot three innocent civilians in Agago.
The SFC soldier also injured two people. The horrific incident occurred on October 20, 2024, around midnight in Ngora East village, Ngora parish, Paimol sub-county, Agago district.
According to Capt Edrin Mawanda, Public Information Officer for the 5 Infantry Division, preliminary information indicates that the soldier hails from Ocini parish, Kamdini sub-county, Oyam district.
“It is alleged that he had misunderstandings with his wife, one Angom Betty who escaped from him. It’s further alleged that he went on a shooting rampage as he was looking for the man who could have taken her.”
The names of the deceased are Apiyo Sunday, 21, Akidi Santino, 47, and Ajalo Florence, 16. All are from the Paimol sub-county.
“The dead bodies were taken to Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital in Kalongo for postmortem,” Captain Mawanda stated.
The injured are Kidega Charles Kumakech, 47, and Apiyo Janet, 20. They were evacuated to Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
“The UPDF leadership in the region regrets and condemns such an incident of misconduct and remains committed to pursuing the soldier who is still at large for prosecution at the scene of crime.
“A joint investigation by the UPDF and sister security agencies is currently underway,” Mawanda added.
