Lira | The Lango sub-region is currently plagued by cultural differences and conflicts, as there are two chiefs (Won Nyaci).
Politically, Lango leaders have been at odds for years, which has hampered progress in almost every sector.
The origins of these conflicts have been claimed, and their causes have been identified.
Former Oyam South MP Isaah Otto Amiza blamed President Museveni Yoweri Kaguta, 80, for the Lango conflict.
Below is what he wrote!
“Last week, Yoweri Museveni, the chronic President of Uganda and Chairman of the NRM-Organization, summoned national NRM leaders from Lango to State House for an in-person meeting with no known agenda.
While the meeting was for NRM Ministers and Members of Parliament, Hon. Betty Amongi, who claims to be a UPC MP and the wife of the “President” of UPC, attended. Whereas the outcome of the meeting is unclear, Lango people who have been voting for NRM at the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local government levels were eagerly awaiting news on the fulfillment of President Museveni’s and the NRM party’s long-awaited pledges.
Owing to the fact that the current term of office of government is left with only one financial year, FY 2025/26, basically to facilitate ongoing projects before a new government takes over in 2026, expectations were high among the population of Lango who are eagerly waiting for strategic implementation of important projects like construction of Akii Bua Stadium to host AFCON in 2027, construction of Lango cultural headquarters, overall compensation of animals (cattle).
Interestingly, from what is being circulated on social media, it appears that the so-called Lango NRM meeting with President Museveni turned out to be an avenue for the two antagonistic rivals of the Lira City woman MP seat come 2026, overshadowing serious issues affecting the people of Lango, as has been the trend of meetings with Museveni.
Whereas I have been very reluctant to involve myself in discussing the internal wrangle for superiority and possible bargain with Museveni by the two daughters of Oyam, the news that came from the meeting invited my attention, and it was quite revealing that the real cause of internal rift and rivalry for power and influence in Lango over cultural and political offices are products of Museveni’s own manipulation and strategy to keep internal division within Lango for his
It must be noted that President Museveni appointed Amongi from the UPC party as opposed to Aceng who is a member of NRM party. That obviously resolves the conflict for the two Ministers without requiring a debate within the NRM party.
One must now ask questions such as why Museveni cannot pronounce his position on an NRM party member without calling for another consultation meeting with Mama Miria, Jimmy Akena, and Betty Amongi, who are considered UPC members seeking a position over an NRM party-secured Parliamentary seat.
Secondly, the move clearly shows that President Museveni has a better political deal with Amongi of UPC than Dr. Aceng of his so-called NRM party, and thus any NRM party meeting with President Museveni over Lango affairs is redundant in the sense that it is only meant to divide and sow discord, stifling any serious development of the people.
It further informs that, in addition to being in the NRM in Lango, one may wish to be in the UPC in order to facilitate dialogue and serious engagement with President Museveni as a single front on Lango issues, avoiding a monopoly of cooperation by a few individuals.
Obviously, learning from the events preceding the 2016 and 2021 elections, President Museveni’s friendship with the founding family of the UPC should not cause any debate or conflict between NRM supporters and UPC supporters in Lango because the end game and records are known and predictable.
The political deal or cooperation between Museveni and Obote’s family should not surprise Aceng and her fellow NRM accomplices in Lango because Museveni’s statements are no longer reliable and honest. This is a similar dilemma Lango faces today due to the never-ending feud between Mzee Yosam Odur, “Museveni’s uncle,” and Eng. Odongo Okune, “Museveni’s son,” exacerbated by the addition of another high-level cadre to the fold.
In my brief analysis, President Museveni will continue to facilitate or hide his face for warring parties in Lango to frustrate any unity that could foster real progress in the region by deploying opportunistic individuals to cause rifts and conflicts that serve his selfish political agenda against the unity and progress of the Lango people.
Obviously, a stable united Lango with focused directional leadership that concentrates on serious development cannot be entertained by the Museveni’s NRA/M in Lango sub-region. This is something that keeps slipping the minds of the people of Lango who claim to belong to NRM.
The fact that Mr. Museveni is unwilling to assert himself as NRM Chairman to protect an NRM cadre in Lango portrays him as the most untrustworthy and egoistic opportunist in politics, unconcerned about the fate of other so-called NRM party members in Lango.
Everyone knows that President Museveni is Uganda’s super ruler, with the power and influence to resolve the feud between Amongi and Aceng, but he continues to play hide and seek for the sake of his personal political survival and the capture of Lango.
Those of you in his zoo better watch your steps before you are alienated.”
