IWPG and tndNews host sustainable journalism peace conference

On August 30, the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG)’s Global Region 12, led by Global Regional Director Soo-jeong Lee, held ‘Uganda-Kenya Sustainable Journalism Peace Conference’.

The online event was co-hosted by Uganda’s digital newspaper, tndNews, with journalists from Uganda and Kenya encouraged to practise Peace Journalism and inform the world about peace.

IWPG introduced its peace activities and major projects to tndNews in 2020, before signing a Memorandum of Agreement on December 21, 2022.

Milton Emmy Akwam, Founder and Acting Managing Editor of tndNews, has played an important role in promoting IWPG and its peace activities not only in Uganda, but also throughout the Global Region 12.

Akwam spoke at the conference about the role of journalists in promoting peace, pledging to collaborate and mobilise journalists in the Region.

He emphasised the importance of peace for humanity and national security. “When there is peace, nations and families remain stable.

“To advance toward complete world peace, we need many people voicing peace. Journalists should play that role,” he added.

Soo-jeong Lee, Global Regional Director, stated that “President Nelson Mandela, who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his peace movement, and Kenyan female peace activist Wangari Maathai inspire and motivate me in my peace work.

“We invited journalists who will become the right eyes and ears of Uganda and Kenya. I hope that through this event, Africa can become a continent where the aspirations for peace shine brighter as they [journalists] become the trumpet of peace.”

A similar conference will be held in the near future, and plans are underway to recognise journalists who have extensively reported on peace and whose journalism has had an impact.

Meanwhile, IWPG is a global women’s non-governmental organisation (NGO) registered with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Department of Global Communications (DGC).

Headquartered in South Korea, IWPG has a vision of ‘Realising Sustainable World Peace’.

Furthermore, IWPG is actively working on women’s solidarity, spreading peace culture, educating women about peace, and supporting and advocating for the ‘Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).’
