Serere I Police from Serere Central Police Station have launched an investigation into a suspected arson incident that occurred on July 7, 2024, around 11:00 p.m.
The incident occurred at Shani Gardens, Upper Shops, Kakus Cell, Serere town council, Serere district.
It is claimed that Emmanuel Oluka, a UPDF officer assigned to Kabong district, went to Shani Gardens to book a room for the night with his unidentified girlfriend.
Around 1:00 a.m., workers heard what sounded like an explosion. When they looked closer, they discovered smoke coming from Oluka’s room. Shortly after, they noticed Oluka running out of the room in only his pants.
The workers quickly extinguished the fire with the intent of rescuing Oluka’s girlfriend.
ASP Edison Obukulem, the acting police PRO for East Kyoga, stated that the suspected arson case against Emmanuel Oluka was reported to Serere CPS by Charles Egau, 27. The reporter is Shani Gardens’ manager.
Preliminary findings indicate that Oluka may have accidentally left a burning cigarette filter in his bag, resulting in the fire.
Scene of Crime Officers investigated and documented the scene, and burnt items, primarily Oluka’s UPDF uniforms, were recovered.
Obukulem confirmed that no arrests have yet been made, but investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided.
