Sports is the greatest unifier of people—youth MP Okot

Rugby

Lira | Uganda has won the bid to host the Africa Rugby Cup in 2024 and 2025.

Rugby is becoming a more popular sport among young people on a local level, according to Okot Boniface, northern Uganda’s youth MP.

According to MP Okot, the bid presents an opportunity for the country to provide meaningful employment to the majority of its young people, as rugby is one of the highest-paying professions in the world.

He made the remarks on April 26, 2024, on the floor of Parliament, informing the House that Northern Uganda, specifically Lango, takes the lead in promoting sporting activities throughout the country.

“Uganda is ranked fifth in Africa despite our minimal rugby investment. Imagine if we invested more than we do now; this would give Uganda a comparative advantage over other countries.

“As a country, we must begin investing reasonably in the areas where we have a comparative advantage,” Okot said.

The MP praised some educational institutions, such as Lango College and Comboni College, for actively promoting rugby.

Carafino Odoc, the NRM’s Kole district administration secretary, said of Okot. “This is the kind of deliberation I appreciate. I have been paying close attention to Okot since his first day in Parliament, and his contributions are unquestionably among the most vibrant and articulate politicians whose representations benefit everyone.”

In the 2026 general elections, Okot plans to change his political goal post to Kole South.
