Dr Erizali Opio: Former Uganda Cranes Doctor passes on aged 83

Lango and Uganda has lost a distinguished son in Dr Erizali Opio. Born in 1941, the former national football team Doctor died on April 15 from Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

His Life History

  • He was born on 10th September 1941 in Aromo to the Late Enocka and Julieri Otyek
  • Studied at Alito and Aculbanya Primary school
  • Went to Sir Samuel Baker High school in Gulu for O level
  • Studied at Nabumali High School in Mbale for A level
  • Studied at Makerere University where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Masters Degree in Internal medicine¬†
  • He later undertook a post graduate diploma on Chest diseases in the Czech Republic¬†

He worked at Mulago Hospital from 1968 to 1974 and at the same time was the team Doctor for Uganda Cranes.

Worked at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital from 1974 to 1977 where he served as a Consultant Physician.

He later got married to Hellen Rose Akech Alugu from the family of the Late Mzee Mordecai Olugu of Aber,Oyam from the clan of Okarawok Oberane.

In February 1977, he fled to exile in Kenya to escape from the Amin regime.

He was deployed by the Ministry of Health, Kenya to Kisumu Provincial Hospital as a provincial physician covering various districts under Nyanza Province from 1977 to 1983.

In 1983, he set up a private practice clinic and at the same time worked as a visiting physician at Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu, Kenya.

In 2013, he returned back to Ugandada and worked at Lira Medical Centre for two years as a consultant physician.

He then retired from active practice.

Dr Erizali is survived by 8 children, 2 girls and 6 boys with 16 grandchildren.

He is also survived by one living brother Mzee Lameck Ogwal the husband to the Late Hon Cecilia Ogwal and 3 sisters.
