(Last Updated On: 20 March 2024)

Kole | Police investigators in Kole district are already investigating a suspected murder by a mob.

The crime occurred on March 19, 2024, around 4 am at Kona village, Ilera parish, Ayer sub-county in Kole.

On the fateful day, it is alleged that Odongo Bonny, 33, a resident of Barolik village, Agwa parish, Aleka sub-county in Oyam district together with his colleague (not identified) went and parked their motorcycle along the road but near the home of one Ogwal Robert.

They intended to steal. “True Odongo broke into the kitchen and allegedly stole a cock and put it into a sack. However, the dogs started barking which made Ogwal Robert wake up,” SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga said.

He (Ogwal) peeped through the window and saw the deceased coming out of the kitchen.

As communicated by SP Okema, Ogwal later came out and started making an alarm that attracted so many community members.

“The colleague whom he had left on the roadside, took off after hearing the alarm.

“The deceased tried to run but was caught at a distance of only 300 metres from the scene. He was beaten by the mob badly and died later,” the PRO revealed.

SP Okema said the incident was reported to Apii Police post where a case of murder by the mob was registered.

“The crime scene was examined and documented by the district SOCO together with a team of detectives from the homicide squad in Kole district.

The exhibits of a cock and a padlock were recovered, added Okema. “Statements were recorded from relevant witnesses.”

The dead body was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital pending postmortem.

“We want to thank the community members for exhibiting neighbour-watch and responding to an alarm made by Mr Ogwal, but again condemn very strongly the actions of taking laws into their hands.

Previous records indicate that on August 30, 2023, the deceased was arrested over the offence of burglary and theft and was taken to Ayara Police Post.

He was beaten badly and taken to hospital but escaped, according to SP Okema.
