A Madhvani sugarcane plantation guard identified as Denis Avaga, 27, who is a resident of Mawoito A village, Kakira Town Council, Jinja district on February 20, 2024, returned home from work only to be shocked.

At around 10 pm, he arrived home and purportedly overheard his wife screaming above her voice in their room.

Preliminary Police findings say the noise prompted him to kick the door hard to gain entry. Later,  Avaga found his wife having sex with another man.

SP James Mubi, Kiira regional Police spokesperson identified the man caught in the act of intimacy as Raphael Onzima, 26, while the woman has been identified as Agnes Agidru, 32.

She works as a casual labourer with Kakira Sugar Limited.

Meanwhile, Onzima is said to be a sugarcane cutter working with Kakira Sugar Limited and a resident of Mutai camp in Kakira Town Council.

The Police statement also revealed that when the two were caught having sex serious fight immediately erupted between the two men. The prime suspect, Raphael Onzima, allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed Denis Avaga (husband to Agidru) in the chest, stomach and arm.

SP Mubi confirmed the incident, citing that  Avaga died following heavy bleeding he sustained from the deep stabbing in the chest while Raphael Onzima ran for his dear life naked from the scene of crime up to Kakira Central Police Station.

Agnes Agidru ran naked too from the scene of the crime up to Wanyange in Kakira Town Council where she hid herself in the sugarcane plantation.

However, Police pursued and arrested her for further investigations.

“It is unfortunate that Denis Avaga succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Madhvani Hospital for medical attention and treatment after heavy bleeding,” Mubi added.

Police now confirm that exhibits of evidential value have been retrieved from the scene including among others Onzima’s pants, shirt, cap and bedsheets plus the woman’s clothes.

From the perspective of the landlord, Peter Ocheng, 52, his tenants (Denis Avaga and his wife Agnes Agidru) had only paid ten thousand shillings as rent for February with an outstanding balance of twenty thousand shillings.

It is upon this that Mubi confirmed the arrest of five people including the prime suspect, Raphael Onzima, Agnes Agidru and  Geoffrey Echoku 42 (a neighbour who allegedly cheered the two men to fight).

Others are Peter Ocheng (landlord) for failure to report the matter to authorities and Pamela Ocheng, 35, (Landlord’s wife) for allegedly interfering with the crime scene.

Preliminary report further indicates that  Raphael Onzima and Agnes Agidru have been moving around bars in Kakira Town Council holding hands and kissing in public while paying little or no attention to Denis Avaga, now dead.
