Lira City registers ‘first’ fatal road crash in 2024

Lira | Two people have been confirmed dead after an unidentified motor vehicle driven by an unknown driver knocked a motorcycle Reg. No. UFV 820R at the junction to Teso Bar along Lira Cathedral Road in Lira City. The incident happened two hours into 2024.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, Police PRO for North Kyoga Region confirmed it while delivering the first New Year crime report on Monday.

It’s alleged that an unknown driver was from Lira City business centre heading towards Lira Cathedral Road in Lira City at 2:25 am.

The car, Okema said, was trying to negotiate a corner (opposite Mayor’s Garden) to Teso Bar. Out of the three people on the motorcycle, two passengers died on the spot. The rider was quickly rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

The dead bodies were conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem reports.

By press time, the details of the motor vehicle were still unknown, said Okema.

As the investigation is ongoing, Police have appealed to anyone who may know the whereabouts of the vehicle to quietly inform them so it can be impounded to support their investigation.

This is the first fatal traffic case registered in North Kyoga Region in 2024, SP Okema revealed.
