(Last Updated On: 19 December 2023)

Lira | While addressing media in Lira City this week, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson said more than shs80m was intercepted in the region within two months.

Okema further disclosed that they have registered more than four cases of robberies from different people in Anai – a popular suburb of Lira City West Division and other areas.

One of the incidents in the area, he said, saw shs35m intercepted. Another shs45m was recovered in a failed robbery along Lira-Alebtong road.

Police now appeal to the general public to get security when they are going to withdraw huge money from the banks.

On loans, the Police PRO cited one incident that happened in Kole district where a lady committed suicide after she failed to pay back the loan she had borrowed.

Another incident that is still under investigation by Police in Lira City West Division is two suspects who belong to Acan Pite Ilwete Group.

The two are facing allegations of stealing a motor vehicle and other household items from a group member identified as Odyek Gerald Moses, 33.

Odyek is, per Okema, a businessman and resident of Ober Kampala, Lira City West Division.

SP Okema said it’s alleged that in June 2023, Odyek borrowed a loan of shs3,500,000 from Acan Pite Ilwete Group where he is also a member. The loan was at an interest of 10% per month.

Odyek was to pay all the money in November 2023. Unfortunately, he only paid shs1.4m.

His payment model annoyed the group members. On December 4, 2023, at around 0500 hours, Ongom Felix, 37-year-old businessman and Emor Daniel, 26, went to Odyek’s home and broke into his house. They stole all household properties.

Earlier, they had impounded his motorcycle with REG. No. UFK 881Y. This event happened at the group’s savings office at Lira Bus Park.

A case file of theft vide Lira City West Division SD Ref 27/16/12/2023 was opened. Two suspects (Ongom and Emor) were arrested and are in Police custody to help in investigations.

Statements of the suspects were recorded and filed for submission to Resident City State Attorney for perusal and advice on preferred charges, Okema adds.
