Karamoja: 37,746 livestock recovered since operation “Usalama Kwa Wote” was launched

Abim, June 12, 2023: The 3 Division of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has released lists of achievements since the forces launched its operation to combat livestock warriors in Karamoja sub-region.

Maj Isaac Oware is the Public Information Officer of 3 Division. In his June 11, 2023 statement, he released “weekly achievements on disarmament operations in Karamoja from June 3 to Jun 9, 2023.

  • Guns recovered from warriors, 2
  • Ammos recovered from warriors, 14
  • Warriors/suspects arrested, 33
  • Warriors Prosecuted/Remanded, 00
  • Cattle recovered from warriors, 198
  • Goats/Sheep recovered from warriors, 129

On the overall achievements since July 13, 2021, when Operation Usalama Kwa Wote was launched, he announced that;

  • Guns recovered from warriors, 838
  • Ammos recovered from warriors, 6324
  • Warriors Prosecuted by Division Court Martial 1,358
  • Suspects handled through civil courts, 1,481
  • Livestock (Cattle, Goats, Sheep & Donkeys) recovered, 37,746

Cattle rustling in Karamoja have had adverse effects on community development both in the sub-region and across sub-regions of Lango and Acholi, including Teso.

Amid efforts to calm the situation and allow communal relationships, the concept has not been embraced by livestock warriors making some areas of Karamoja more volatile.
