Acholi’s two athletes to represent Uganda in the Japan marathon

Two athletes from Acholi sub-region are set to represent Uganda in Japan’s Annual Marathon which will kick off in Izumisano City in mid-February 2023.

The two were endorsed by the woman MP of Gulu City, Mego Aol Betty Ocan. In total, Uganda will send four to Japan. The other two have been endorsed by the Uganda Athletic Federation (UAF).

Walter Oyoo, 23, is a Gulu University student who spoke to TND News’ Correspondent, Lil Okot at a press conference at Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC). He says he has been doing his training at Kapcora training ground. 

“I will not disappoint Uganda,” he promised.

Oyoo, however, revealed that in a trial held in Gulu, he made 2:04:03 hrs for 34 kilometres and promised to reduce it to 2:10 hrs in 42.195 kilometres.

Oyoo started his career in athletics back in his primary school days when he was in primary five at St Peter primary school, Layibi; continued with it to Pope John Paul secondary school. 

He has participated in many marathons and has been successful.

He boasts of many certificates and awards in local and national competitions. “This will be the first international sport which has been hindered by lack of finance and local support.”

The trials held last year attracted more than 30 athletes and were used as a yardstick to identify who flies to Japan. 

Angnes Oroma, 35, is another athlete set to feature in Japan. For over 6 years of participation, she said no one has supported her talent but thanked MP Aol for the support.

“My career started way back when I was in primary five and I have been participating in many marathons including the Maria marathon, and Rotary runs, among others and I have made it to number one.

Division mayor of Bardege-Layibi, Patrick Lumumba, said, “On behalf of the city council, I agreed to support the trip of the two participants and other expenses while welcoming them at Entebbe Airport together with Aol Betty Ocan, Woman MP Gulu City.”

Meanwhile, MP Aol Betty Ocan said, “The partnerships with Japan will not only deal with the athletes but also other developments like in education, transport sector; infrastructure, among others.”

Ugandan participating athletes are setting off on February 8, 2023.
