Kampala – August 15, 2022: Kenyans cast their ballot on Tuesday, August 9 to end two terms of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
The Tuesday election was described as largely peaceful by the commonwealth observation chair.
Four candidates were vying to replace Uhuru, with notably and popular candidates like Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto among significant contenders.
An official tally showed, initially, Raila was ahead. The former Prime Minister was later overtaken by Ruto in a tight race for the State House.
As of Monday, August 15, Ruto was ahead with more than 50 percent of the votes verified by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission [IEBC] and Raila was got 48 percent.
A winner needs to garner 50 plus one percent to be declared President-Elect.
As reported by the BBC, desks being used for the result verification process had been cleared and the national tallying centre was being prepared for the declaration by 9 pm, Monday.
On Sunday, Odinga and Ruto urged Kenyans to be patient as they wait for the IEBC to determine which of them would be the country’s fifth president.
Days before the Sunday appeals, each of their camps claim victory in the August 9 elections.
