Kampala – July 7, 2022: Makerere University students are set to elect their 88th Guild President. The top office has attracted candidates from different political parties.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) Shamim Nambassa is the current Makerere’s guild president who got huge backing from the party in her quest for office last year.
With preparations for the next election, Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) and some well-wishers are firmly behind Brian Ndibarema.
On Thursday, July 7, the UPC secretary general Fred Ebil handed over an envelope containing facilitation cash to the UPC candidate.
The giving happened at the party headquarters at Uganda House in the morning. “He [Ebil] appreciated their spirit and commitment to the party and encouraged them to tag the campaign message to tangible concerns of students at the University with alternative policies focused on addressing such issues,” Muzey Faizo, UPC’s head of media and communications said of Ebil.
“He reminded them that UPC has a legacy of leadership at Makerere University which they should take advantage of.”
UPC branch chairman for Makerere University Ssemwanga John Baptist accompanied Ndibarema to Uganda House.
The party has not publicly disclosed how much it has given her candidate for the anticipated hot race.
TND News is aware of an ongoing fundraising drive from some party members and well-wishers to support Ndibarema’s candidature.
The said fundraising is taking place in some WhatsApp groups – and close to shs400, 000 had been raised by Wednesday, July 6.
The upcoming guild election – according to Makerere University Council won’t be done online as was earlier expected. The council’s decision comes after students’ disagreement citing a lack of any provision for electronic voting and regulations protecting the electoral process.
