Lira, March 29, 2022: The UPC has strangely delayed endorsing its candidate for the EALA seat, according to some aspirants who are seeking the Akena led party to endorse them.

Some aspirants say they are already aware of the “game plan” the party officials are playing and how they (officials) are trying to get a candidate from “within the close system”.

This claim was quashed by one of the party leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“The UPC we all know is transparent and democratic. The aspirants have to listen to the party and refuse rumours,” he said.

According to him, “soon” the party’s choice will be made public. Asked when, “I really don’t know,” he answered.

At least five aspirants including two former MPs picked nomination forms worth shs1m per person for the EALA seat. This was more than 45 days ago.

The party’s acting Secretary-General Fred Ebil Ebil (former Kole South MP) and Atim Joy Ongom (former Lira district Woman MP), Ojok Anok (former aspirant), Ogwang Calvin and Atim Brenda (senior staff at UPC) are some of the aspirants.

Some say the “unexplained and suspicious delay” to having the UPC parliamentary caucus conduct vetting speaks volumes.

“I may consider leaving UPC for another party since UPC is a party for some people,” one aspirant said, adding, “I already know the illegalities and the game the party president is forced to play and he is powerless.”

Two aspirants said they may consider running on independent tickets in the EALA race.

Claiming to know the outcome of the vetting process, one aspirant said will painfully accept the outcome.

The UPC spokesperson Sharon Arach told this digital newspaper on Tuesday morning, “I haven’t got feedback from my superiors. Right now the people of Acholi are busy with the burial of Jacob Oulanyah and nobody wants to talk about that (EALA).”

She promised to provide this newspaper with the feedback when it’s available.

Political parties like DP and FDC already have candidates for EALA.
