Names of 19 people hurt in Lira Fuso lorry fatal road crash

“Preliminary findings indicate over speeding by the driver, overloading and reckless driving,” ASP Jimmy Okema told Journalists earlier on Monday evening.


Lira – January 10, 2022: Police has released names of passengers who survived the fatal road crash on Lira-Abako road on Monday evening. The passengers (traders) were returning from Ajuri market in Alebtong district.

Seven people died on spot. A Fuso lorry Reg. No: UBJ354G carrying them overturned on its way to Lira City.

On Tuesday morning, two more died: a mother and her months’ old child who were both admitted at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

The incident happened at Alik-pot in Agali sub-county, Lira district in the evening.

“We have confirmed 19 people were injured and below are their details,” North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson ASP Jimmy Patrick Okema announces.

Shortly after the nasty event, phone video showed area residents standing in shock at the scene of the crash – many were heard crying – some helping the victims.

A driver of a private car arrived and would be heard saying “bring the child” and he was soon told “the baby was taken”, “bring those feeling unwell,” he added.

“Preliminary findings indicate over speeding by the driver, overloading and reckless,” ASP Jimmy Okema told Journalists hours later on Monday evening.

“It’s a very unfortunate incidence,” Okema added.

Last year, TND News’ preliminary figures tallied in October showed more than 20 people had died in road crashes in Lira district alone. The figures could have gone up in the months of November and December of the same year.
