Oyam – January 23, 2022: The government of Uganda will fund the reconstruction of the dilapidated Lira-Kamdini road – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has told Lango.

Museveni was meeting selected Lango leaders at Alidi primary school in Loro town council, Oyam district on Saturday.

Gen. Yoweri heeded the demand of Lango activists and politicians under LPG who had arranged a peaceful demonstration if the government had not told the Lango sub-region when the road works would commence.

The over 75kilometer Lira-Kamdini road was to be funded by the World Bank.

“The Lira-Kamdini road would have been worked on a long time ago, I have not got any report from Uganda National Road Authority on the poor status of the road,” Yoweri told Lango.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has contracted Mota-Engil to undertake maintenance of the lethal road. The current state of the road is shocking and has killed dozens, and injured scores.

The 78km road was last rehabilitated to the standard between 2008 and 2009 by the government and it developed potholes years later.

The highway is a major road in Lango and is also part of the Great North Road that stretches from Busia, through Tororo, Mbale, Soroti, and Lira up to Southern Sudan via Kamdini and Gulu district.

Meanwhile, some Lango leaders were barred from attending the meeting with Museveni after testing positive for Covid-19.

Activists and the affected politicians said it was a mere plan to deny them access meeting venue.
