Gulu: Health officials ask community to support Covid-19 patients as death stands at 112

Gulu -17, August 2021: The Gulu city health educator, Geoffrey Toopiny and the Gulu district health educator, William Onyai have called upon the communities of Gulu to support Covid-19 patients under home—based care.

Geoffrey Toopiny says, “People are now forgetting about the Covid-19 situations within the city and the Covid -19 situation is worsening day and night.”

Mr Toopiny disclosed that since the president’s loosening of the lockdown, people have forgotten and are neglecting the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

He, however, urges the communities of Gulu city to continue putting on face masks, regular washing of hands or use of sanitizers and observing a social distance in order to aid the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

William Onyai, the Gulu district health educator says, “People have now forgotten about the Covid -19 spread and people think that Covid -19 only exists in the hospitals.”

He also urges the communities of Gulu district to come in and support patients in the home–based care unit. “The fresh air and conducive environment in the communities can easily help more than the oxygen in the Covid-19 treatment units,” he adds.

“Showing care to these patients will definitely boost their hope and make them have trust in living rather than stigmatizing them,” Onyai urges.

According to Geoffrey Toopiny, Gulu city has 57 Covid -19 patients under home–based care system. Meanwhile, Gulu district has a total of 21 Covid-19 patients under the same unit.

Gulu district at the moment has 25 Covid -19 patients and 15 are in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor; 6 at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital with 3 in Intensive Care Unit.

21 are in the home based care in Gulu district and 57 in home – based care in Gulu city with a total of 3071 patients and 112 deaths at the moment.
