Gulu—10 October 2020: Lugore government prison authorities have been commended for taking the lead in promoting agriculture in northern Uganda.
State Minister for Northern Uganda, Hon Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny said on Thursday during her official visits to the prison farms.
She encouraged all the people in the region to welcome different agricultural projects in order to fight household poverty.
The Minister was led to the farms by the Officer-In-Charge (OC) of the prison, ACP Alex Mukkola Oloka, the Edwin Foundation Tea Initiative (EFOTI) director, Mr Edwin Atukunda Beekunda, among other leaders.
She visited a tea mother garden that is reserved for training, demonstration and research purposes for the entire region.
“I thank you for being exemplary to the entire region,” she said. Among the projects she visited were tea, maize, fruits, banana plantations, and many more projects.

Meanwhile, Mr Atukunda, who is reviving and promoting tea growing in northern Uganda, blames government for lack of support to the sector, especially tea sub-sector.

He says since 2013; he has written to different stakeholders for support, but in vain. “I have met almost all leaders from Head of State to the local authorities no response. I have borrowed from all banks, sold everything I owned borrowed in order to promote tea,” he told the publication on Friday.
“What more support can I offer to my lovely government? At least let me get a medal for introducing tea in areas where whites had declared it for just tobacco, simsim, cassava and other food crops,” selfless Atukunda added.
