“I am doing my duty by everybody, and that I am here to use the great powers of my office in the interest of all the people, including the Humblest,” says Mr Atul.
Lira—30, September 2020: “Lira City needs an experienced leader, a planner, advice seeker to allow it to develop faster, greener and healthier than all the cities in Uganda, including Capital, Kampala,” some Lira residents had this to say after government announced Lira City status, few months ago.
Majority of people across Lango sub-region also say with the strategic location Lira City enjoys, it can grow faster and economically in a “very short time”. This, some say, will rely basically on the brands of people the voters will elect as a City Mayor, Division MPs, among other leaders in the next general elections in 2021.
“True leadership needs joint efforts. Voters should elect good leaders from lower offices to the top who are able to show positive results of their leadership,” Hon. Daniel Omara Atubo, a former Minister said in his press conference held on 26, August 2020 in Lira City.
According to the former Otuke County MP, Atubo, he added that Lira City Mayor should be a “people’s Mayor for all political parties”.
“A transparent leader, matured with enough experience, highly learned who can bring results,” he described few qualities of a veritable City Mayor, a month ago.

Lira City mayoral race has attracted over two aspirants. UPC and NRM have their flag bearers, and others will contest on an independent ticket.
Among aspirant who will contest on independent ticket are Mr Martin Ocen Odyek and Mr Sam Atul. The latter is a businessman who also served Christians of All Saints Cathedral Barogole in Lira City West Division as Head of Laity.
One of the founding directors of Radio Unity 97.7FM, Mr Atul was nominated on Wednesday 30, September 2020.
After his nomination, he had this to say—verbatim.
Fellow Countrymen and Women, my ambition is to have in our City a stable government that is just and fair, a government that is honest, a government that will protect the rights of everybody, a government before whom the lowest man will receive the same consideration as the most powerful
Lira City needs a leader who will be able to face those who voted for him and those who did not and say to them that; “I am doing my duty by everybody, and that I am here to use the great powers of my office in the interest of all the people, including the Humblest.”
Today, I was also today duly nominated by the Independent Electoral Commission of Uganda as the Independent Aspirant for Mayor Lira City Council.
Lira City Council is politically being managed by the acting mayor, Mr Mike Ogwang Olwa Veve, a UPC man who has shown interest to compete for the top City office.
Mr Willy Omodo Omodo, a son to the former Lira Municipality mayor, Omodo Anyuru (RIP) is holding NRM party flag for the same seat.
He trounced ‘popular politician’ and a businessman, Mr George Mawa, in the NRM primaries.
Mr Mawa has been eyeing the Mayoral office when Lira was still a Municipality, and by then, he was also a councillor representing the people of Barogole parish to Lira Municipal Council.
