Unpopular UTL says it registered 16% revenue growth since 2017

A brief survey conducted for 30 minutes on Friday by TND News shows that 4 out of 10 Ugandans doesn’t know Uganda Telecommunications Limited still exist.

Also, 2 out of 10 revealed that they have never bought or used its simcard for decades.

While, five people of those interviewed urged “government” to dispose it off, to serious investor(s).

“For you to know something exist, it must be very active. In telecom business, I don’t know UTL,” Jason Kintu, 35, says.

“The last time I heard about it was in 2007 and then, it was powerful,” recalls Lillian Azuba, a trader in Wandegeya, north of Kampala.

However, government, through Evenly Anite, Finance State Minister in charge Investment says government has lost control of once powerful UTL.

So, how is unpopular UTL surviving, amidst stiff competition from rivals like MTN, Airtel, and Africell?

Addresding the media in Kampala on Friday, UTL Administrator, Bemanya Twebaze gave “convincing progress for nearly three years”.

Mr. Twebaze gave the following brief highlights since May, 2017.

1. 16% growth in revenue, improvement in Network availability.
2. Validation of creditors’ claims.
3. Connection of over 350 Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies(MDAs) and;
4. Championing the reduction in Internet prices in Uganda among many others.
