Former Lira Diocese Bishop, Oyanga dies at 82

Death has robbed the Catholic Church and Uganda at large of Rt. Rev. Joseph Oyanga [Bishop Emeritus] of Lira Diocese.

A statement by Uganda Episcopal Conference on Sunday confirmed his death.

“Bp Joseph Oyanga, the retired bishop of Lira, has passed on around 1.00pm at St Anthony Hospital in Tororo,” the statement reads in part.

Who was Bishop Oyanga?

The Rt. Rev. Joseph Oyanga was born in Omoro, Alebtong district, Lira Diocese on the 28, February 1936.

He was ordained a priest of Tororo Diocese on 19 May, 1963 in Alanyi parish by Bishop Cypriano Kihangire of Gulu at that time.

He worked in Tororo Diocese until 14, July 1989 when he was elected second Bishop of Lira Diocese.

On the 1, October, 1989, he was ordained Lira Diocese Bishop until 2 December, 2003 when he retired.

The deceased was succeeded by and the current Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Joseph Franzelli.
