Nekyon burial update: Lango Paramount Chiefs Odur, Okune not in program

In a move aimed at avoiding disorder at the final sendoff of Lango departed son Akbar Adoko Nekyon, the two Paramount Chiefs of Lango has been left out from making speeches.

The decision to do so was confirmed by Omara Orech, the Ngila-acel clan chief.

Speaking exclusively at Akbar’s home on Saturday ahead of his burial same day, Mr. Orech said the event was a ‘Muslim arrangement’.

“It’s a Muslim fraternity arrangement and we don’t want any confusion by letting any of the two Paramount Chiefs to address mourners,” he said.

He added: “He (Nekyon) deserves the best sendoff without any confusion from cultural current standoff.”

By press time, His Highness Won Nyaci Yosam Odur Ebii was present alongside some of his loyal clan chiefs.

‘His counterpart’ Dr. Eng. Michael Odongo Okune, the recently enthroned Tekwaro Lango Paramount Chief was not among the mourners.

The Lira Municipality Mayor, Mike Ogwang Olwa Veve eulogized dead Nekyon, describing him as a great author.

Olwa told mourners that had it not been because of Nekyon, the Oyima clan would be culturally dead, adding that the deceased was the best mediator in Lango history.

“I honor him for mediating and reuniting the then divided Oyima clan members worldwide. He paid school fees for many Oyima sons and daughters,” Mayor Ogwang said in his countless eulogies.

“He will be remembered for initiating and funding the construction of Akbar Mosque (here) in Apac,” Olwa added.

Bob Okai, the Apac district Local LC5 Chairperson applauded former clan chief of Oyima for his massive political guidance and mentor-ship.

Speaking on behalf of all the LC5 Chairpersons in Lango Sub-region, Okai recalled that all politicians admired him (Akbar) as an advisor.

Betty Amongi Akena, the Oyam district Woman MP who doubles as Lands Minister promised to asked government to allocate a day every year in remembrance of Adoko Nekyon.

Amongi who’s a daughter Inlaw in Oyima clan, applauded Nekyon for his contributions to Uganda.

Akena Micheal Jimmy, the Lira Municipality MP who doubles as UPC party President, said of the deceased: “He united family members, introduced Nile Perch Fish in Uganda, among others.”

Gen. Moses Ali, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda and who’s the Chief Mourner, representing government of Uganda recalled Nekyon’s contributions at all fronts.

“When NRM government took over,with him, we ensured Muslims who were feared by many loved. We advocated for harmony among Muslim, Anglican and other religious denominations,” he added.

Gen. Ali delivered shs30m, a condolence from President Museveni.

Akbar was buried on Saturday at his ancestral home in Apoki village, Chegere Sub-county, Apac district at 4pm.
