The construction of the first floor of a new, modern lab at Dr. Obote College Boroboro, one of the traditional historical schools in the North, has reached over 60% completion.

The school has pledged to maintain its status as a center of education under the new curriculum, with targets to improve science subjects, technology, and move away from low results.

The aim is to strengthen science education, especially as the government is also promoting sciences nationwide to achieve success in both “O” and “A” levels.

This good news was announced on Friday, November 6, 2026, by the deputy head teacher in charge of academics at Dr. Obote College, Samuel Okumo, while addressing the media on the developmental progress currently underway at the institution.

Okumo noted that Obote College has traditionally been a science-based school, and the goal now is to restore that legacy to meet modern standards under the new curriculum.

The facility will serve students at both Ordinary and Advanced levels, aligning with the school’s theme of “Achieving Excellence through Discipline and Faith.”

Okumo added that the project is intended to improve the standard of science education at the college, following an initiative from parents who agreed with the Board of Governors to contribute toward the construction of the new modern science lab center.

The facility will house science and ICT labs, a vision from the board to transform Dr. Obote College into a center of scientific excellence.

This is supported by research showing that of over 180 A-level students at the college, only 8 are in arts subjects while 174 are offering sciences.

Finally, he appreciated the parents of Dr. Obote College for their positivity in supporting their children’s education.

He noted that the science lab is intended to improve academic performance, especially in sciences, which is what the school is known for.

He continued that this three-year, four-storey building will cost about 5 billion shillings and is being constructed by Kajuka Engineering Company Limited, with the assurance that the first floor is over 60% complete.

According to Godfrey Okuna, who heads the Department of Chemistry at Dr. Obote College, they have been using an old lab building that has lasted for over 50 years. Its capacity was meant for only about 24 students.

With this newly constructed laboratory, which has specific sections for Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Agriculture, the good news is that it will accommodate more than 60 students at once. This will address the challenge of entering the lab in small groups while doing practical exams.

He assured the general public that although they were using the old lab building, they were still producing good results in all science subjects.

Okuna says Dr. Obote College is a purely science school which has produced very good scientists in the country and beyond.

In conclusion, he encouraged learners and parents to send their children to Dr. Obote College for a bright future.

Atapara Vanessa Mercy, a student in Senior Six at Dr. Obote College and a science student offering PCB, is among the first lot of the new curriculum.

She says that in the past, they had challenges with lab room accommodation while entering the exam room, which was not large enough.

With this new modern science lab, she believes they will achieve better results. She encouraged other students, especially those who have sat PLE and UCE, to join this great institution in the academic year of 2026.

Denis Mola Hamstrong, another Senior Six student under the BCM combination, said Dr. Obote College is a great college of science in Lango, the North, and across the country.

He continued that this new modern science lab is a pleasure and will ensure they produce positive results.

Mola lamented that at the moment, science subjects are the foundation of everything in this country, as everyone is seeing a future in science.
