Kampala Lord Mayor Eng. Ronald Balimwezo has warned contractors working on roads and other infrastructure projects in the city, saying prolonged construction works cannot continue indefinitely at the expense of residents, motorists and business owners.
Balimwezo stressed that Kampala needs development, but contractors must ensure that projects are completed within agreed timelines. He cautioned against allowing construction sites to remain open for too long while city residents struggle with traffic congestion, dust and disruptions to their daily activities.
“We are not going to make Kampala a construction site forever,” the Lord Mayor warned, emphasising the need for accountability and efficiency in the execution of infrastructure projects across the capital.
Construction activities are an important part of Kampala’s efforts to improve roads, drainage systems and other public facilities. However, delays can create serious challenges for commuters, traders and people who depend on accessible roads to move goods and reach their workplaces.

Balimwezo’s warning puts pressure on contractors to review their progress, address obstacles affecting their work and ensure that public projects deliver the expected benefits. Timely completion would also help reduce the inconvenience experienced by residents living and working near construction zones.
For business owners, especially those operating along affected roads, extended construction periods can interfere with customer access, deliveries and daily sales. Motorists and public transport operators may also face longer journeys when roadworks disrupt normal traffic flow.
The Lord Mayor’s remarks highlight the need for stronger coordination between contractors, city authorities and other agencies responsible for infrastructure development. Clear deadlines, regular supervision and proper communication with the public can help minimise disruption while ensuring that construction standards are maintained.
Balimwezo’s message is that Kampala’s development should not become a never-ending inconvenience for the people who live and work in the city. Contractors are expected to complete projects efficiently so residents can enjoy improved infrastructure without being left to endure construction-related disruption indefinitely.
