Tooro Kingdom

Tooro Kingdom has welcomed its new monarch, Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, following his coronation on September 29 after the death of his predecessor, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The new king’s latest activities mark an important moment for the kingdom as it begins a new chapter under his leadership.

Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I held his first meeting with members of the Babiito royal family at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.

The meeting brought together members of the royal family to engage with the new monarch following his ascension to the throne.

The gathering also provided an opportunity for the royal family to meet the king in his new role and discuss matters concerning the kingdom. The Babiito dynasty has played a central role in Tooro’s traditional leadership, cultural identity and royal heritage.

During the event, State Minister Mary Kamuli Kuteesa handed over official recognition documents to the new monarch.

The documents, issued through the Uganda Gazette, formally recognise his position as Omukama of Tooro Kingdom.

The government also presented the king with a Land Cruiser VX.R and a Toyota Hilux to support the performance of his official duties.

The vehicles are intended to facilitate his movements as he undertakes responsibilities associated with cultural leadership and engagements across the kingdom.

However, the vehicle handover sparked debate on social media, with some netizens questioning the use of public resources to support traditional institutions.

Others defended the arrangement, arguing that the vehicles could help the monarch carry out cultural activities, attend community functions and promote unity among the people of Tooro.

In his message, the new Omukama emphasised the importance of preserving Tooro’s culture, promoting peace and strengthening cooperation with the government.

His remarks highlighted the role of traditional institutions in protecting cultural heritage while contributing to community development and social cohesion.

As he begins his reign, Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I faces the responsibility of preserving the kingdom’s traditions while engaging with modern social and development priorities.

His first meeting with the Babiito royal family and the government’s recognition signal the beginning of this new chapter for Tooro Kingdom.
