A 22-year-old Senior Four student has drowned in Lake Bunyonyi in Rubanda District while reportedly attempting to swim from Itambira Island to Bwama Island.The deceased has been identified as Samuel Amanya, a student at Lake Bunyonyi Senior Secondary School-Bwama, located on Bwama Island.According to Kigezi Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the incident occurred on October 3, 2026, at around 11am between Bwama and Itambira landing sites.Police said Amanya had paddled a canoe from Katoma to Itambira Island and arrived there safely before later beginning his journey back to Bwama Island.
However, upon returning, he reportedly discovered that the canoe he had used was no longer at the place where he had left it.Police said Amanya then decided to swim across the lake to reach Bwama Island, but he drowned midway between Itambira and Bwama.Police Marine officers, assisted by local divers, responded to the incident and recovered the student’s body from the waters of Lake Bunyonyi.

Preliminary findings indicate that Amanya died by drowning, although police said investigations are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death. Tumushime has urged parents, schools, guardians and members of the community to caution learners against swimming in the deep waters of Lake Bunyonyi without proper supervision and safety equipment such as life jackets.
