Three people have been confirmed dead and two others injured following a serious road accident at Kabwohe Stage in Sheema Municipality, Sheema District.
The crash occurred on Tuesday evening and involved a trailer, registration number UA 234 DK, which was carrying palm oil when it reportedly lost control and overturned.
After overturning, the trailer crashed into three vehicles at the busy Kabwohe Stage, leaving several people trapped and causing extensive damage.
Preliminary information indicated that more victims could have been trapped inside a Premio and other vehicles involved in the crash, prompting police and emergency responders to begin a recovery operation.
An excavator was brought to the scene to help remove the overturned trailer and give rescuers access to the damaged vehicles as they worked to establish whether there were additional casualties.
SP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the final number of casualties would only be confirmed after the recovery operation and assessment of the scene.
“More details will be provided once the recovery operation is completed and the scene has been fully assessed,” Kananura said.
