MP Acon: ‘157 boreholes in 10 years are not enough for Lango’

Another three new boreholes have been drilled in Otuke and Alebtong districts within one week, courtesy of Otuke East County Member of Parliament Julius Achon Bua.

The new boreholes bring the total to 160 drilled by him over a period of 10 years since he joined Parliament in 2016.

“This has broken a record, as since God created the world, no Member of Parliament in Uganda has ever matched his feat of sacrificing all his monthly payments and investing them to ensure that locals have free access to clean water points,” one of the villagers said.

Between Wednesday, 21 October 2026, and Saturday, 24 October 2026, a total of three new boreholes were drilled in Alebtong and Otuke districts.

The boreholes will serve the community of Oloo Central village, Amuria parish, Alebtong district; residents of Olwedo village, Alula parish, Olilim sub-county in Otuke district; and the community of Aweayella village, Aweayella parish, Alango sub-county in Otuke district.

According to MP Julius Acon Bua, the three boreholes cost shs75 million.

Speaking to tndNews, Uganda, on Saturday, 24 October 2026, after the work was completed, MP Acon stated clearly that his plan is to ensure that, due to climate change, his people do not continue to suffer while looking for water points.

“That is why my priority is concentrating on drilling boreholes, distributing seeds such as simsim and maize, and distributing goat projects for some of the groups, as we shall fight together to kick out poverty within our community,” he said.

He pledged to expand his borehole drilling project to all districts in Lango where there is a shortage of water points.

Each new borehole is valued at shs25 million and rehabilitating another three existing boreholes would cost a further shs15 million, totalling shs90 million, he said.

After recently returning from America, residents from the affected communities approached him for assistance, and he could not ignore their concerns over the persistent shortage of clean water points.

Some of the leaders who spoke appreciated MP Acon for his good heart. Obao Denis, the vice LC1 chairperson of Oloo Central village, said the shortage had compelled some residents to collect rainwater for household use, while others struggled to find reliable sources.

Awany Bonny, the LC1 chairperson of Alula village, and Benson Abuka of Aweayella village also welcomed the planned boreholes, saying the intervention would ease the burden on residents who have struggled to access adequate water.

They all described MP Acon as the “Godfather of Otuke” because it is very rare to find a leader who also has value for those who trusted him with the power of leadership. “This is the kind of leader who thinks twice,” they said.

They noted that some existing boreholes in the communities had deteriorated over time and were no longer producing sufficient water, forcing residents to share available sources with domestic animals.

The leaders expressed hope that the new boreholes and the rehabilitation of existing facilities would reduce the distance residents travel in search of water and improve access to cleaner water for household consumption.
