Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, head of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Kyambogo office, has criticised Uganda Police Force spokesperson Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kituuma Rusoke over orders concerning charcoal use, arguing that the measures could hurt poor households and create difficulties for ordinary Ugandans.

Speaking at her offices in Kampala, Namyalo questioned the purpose of the orders, saying they could place an additional financial burden on families that depend on charcoal for cooking. She expressed concern that the measures could make life harder for people already struggling to meet their daily needs.

Namyalo argued that authorities should consider the circumstances of ordinary citizens before announcing or enforcing measures that affect their livelihoods. She maintained that many Ugandans cannot easily switch to alternative cooking fuels because of the costs involved.

The NRM official also questioned Rusoke’s background, referring to what she described as the financial difficulties his family experienced while he was growing up. Her remarks brought a personal dimension to the disagreement over the reported police directive.

“Let them kill me as they plan, but we shall die fighting for the image of the president,” Namyalo was quoted as saying. She also questioned why officials would hold a press conference to announce orders that, in her view, squeeze poor people.

Namyalo further alleged that some individuals were seeking to take over the government and called on Ugandans who voted for President Yoweri Museveni to come forward and defend him. She warned her supporters that they should speak out before, in her view, it becomes too late.

Her comments come amid concerns over reports of possible police action against people using or buying charcoal. Charcoal remains a major cooking fuel for many Ugandan households, particularly those that cannot afford electricity, gas or other alternatives. The disagreement highlights the challenge of implementing environmental measures while considering the economic realities of low-income families. The precise scope and legal basis of the reported police orders would need to be clarified by the relevant authorities, while Namyalo’s statements reflect her opposition to measures she believes could burden ordinary citizens.
