Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has claimed that more than 20 former soldiers associated with Gen Elweru have been arrested and are co-operating with authorities. According to Muhoozi, the arrested individuals have made statements about Elweru’s conduct and current situation.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, Muhoozi said the former soldiers were co-operating well with those questioning them. He claimed that their accounts were similar, with the soldiers allegedly saying Elweru had experienced mental instability for a long time.
“We have arrested over 20 of Elweru’s former soldiers. They are co-operating well. They all agree he went insane a long time ago,” Muhoozi wrote in the post.
The army chief also issued a direct message to Elweru, urging him to surrender. Muhoozi warned that surrendering would be the best way for him to protect his life, suggesting that authorities consider the situation serious.
“Elweru should SURRENDER soon in order to save his own life,” Muhoozi added in his message. The statement has drawn attention because of its strong wording and the warning directed at the general.
However, the claims about Elweru’s mental state remain allegations attributed to Muhoozi and the former soldiers he says have been arrested. Their statements, as described in the post, do not by themselves establish a medical diagnosis.
The reported arrests also raise questions about the circumstances surrounding the operation, the specific allegations against the former soldiers and Elweru’s whereabouts. Further details would be needed to establish the full background and the status of any investigations.
Muhoozi’s statement places pressure on Elweru to surrender as the situation develops. Any further developments, including an official response from Elweru or additional information from the authorities, could help clarify the circumstances behind the claims.
