Fresh from months of detention, NUP Deputy President for Buganda and former Butambala MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has returned to the political arena with a strong message to President Yoweri Museveni, calling for changes in the way politics is conducted in Uganda.
Kivumbi made the remarks shortly after being granted bail by the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court following months in detention. His return to public life has seen him immediately resume speaking about Uganda’s political future and the need for fair competition.
He challenged Museveni and the ruling government to allow political actors with different ideas to compete for public support instead of treating political opponents as enemies. Kivumbi said political differences should not be viewed as a reason for confrontation.

“We are not your enemies; we simply have a different vision for this country,” Kivumbi said, arguing that opposition politicians should be allowed to present their ideas to Ugandans.
He further urged political actors to compete fairly and persuade citizens to support them. “You are free to support whoever you want, but let us compete fairly. Nobody should impose themselves. Let us compete and persuade the people,” he said.
Kivumbi also used the image of a garden of roses to argue that Uganda should provide space for different political ideas to grow and compete. He said every generation has a responsibility to leave a better country for those who come after them.
His comments come after a difficult legal period that saw him detained and later face charges including incitement to violence and managing an unlawful society, allegations he has denied. He also remains involved in a separate case before the International Crimes Division of the High Court.
Despite his legal battles, Kivumbi has signalled that his return from detention will not stop his political activities. He said political disagreements should be handled through constitutional means and maintained that Ugandans should be given the opportunity to freely choose their leaders through fair political competition.
