The late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, had a strong desire to pursue a military career before fully embracing his role as a cultural leader, according to his cousin Patrick Mpuuga.

Mpuuga revealed that the late King’s interest in the military was one of the lesser-known parts of his life, describing him as a young monarch who had ambitions beyond the responsibilities of the Tooro throne.

According to Mpuuga, King Oyo was deeply inspired by the military background of his grandfather, former Tooro King George Mathew David Kamurasi Rukidi III.

The cousin said Oyo admired his grandfather’s military legacy and developed a dream of following a similar path by receiving formal military training.

Mpuuga explained that one of King Oyo’s biggest ambitions was to join the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, an institution known for training military officers from around the world.

However, that dream did not become a reality, although efforts were later made to give the young King a chance to experience military training.

With support from President Yoweri Museveni, arrangements were made for King Oyo to undergo military training at Kasenyi.

The training allowed the young monarch to gain exposure to military discipline, leadership skills and the values associated with service in the armed forces.

Mpuuga said the experience reflected King Oyo’s determination to explore different areas of leadership and personal development beyond his traditional royal duties.

The revelation has added another layer to the public’s understanding of the late King, showing a side of him that was rarely discussed during his lifetime.

King Oyo became the Omukama of Tooro at just three years old after the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995.

His coronation attracted international attention because he became one of the youngest reigning monarchs in the world at the time.

Despite taking on the throne at a very young age, King Oyo gradually grew into his responsibilities and became a respected cultural figure in Uganda.

During his reign, he focused on promoting education, health programmes, youth empowerment, tourism and the preservation of Tooro’s cultural heritage.

His leadership journey saw him balance the expectations of a traditional monarch with modern interests and personal ambitions.

Mpuuga’s tribute highlights the influence of previous generations on King Oyo’s life, especially the role his grandfather’s legacy played in shaping his dreams.
