Lango clan leaders held a special cultural sitting on Monday in honour of the late Mzee Nelson Abor, former Awitong (clan leader) of Bako Opuk Clan.

The sitting brought together cultural and political leaders who gathered to pay tribute to Mzee Abor and reflect on his contribution to the Lango community.

Cultural leaders described the late as a respected teacher and leader whose contribution will have a lasting impact on the lives of many people.

They proposed the establishment of an education centre in his memory, saying the initiative would preserve his legacy while continuing the work he valued most — transforming lives through education and leadership.

The leaders said an institution bearing his name would provide future generations with an opportunity to learn about his contribution to the community and draw inspiration from his leadership.

In his speech, the leader of Lango Cultural Institution Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune announced plans to introduce awards to recognise cultural leaders who demonstrate commitment and hard work in serving the Lango community.

He said the awards would be intended to appreciate leaders who dedicate themselves to preserving Lango culture, promoting unity and serving their communities.

Eng Odongo also revealed plans for the establishment of a Lango Cultural Cemetery, where cultural leaders would be laid to rest and their legacies preserved.

The cemetery, he said, would provide a dedicated place to remember cultural leaders who have played significant roles in the development and preservation of Lango culture.

He said persistent criticism, disrespect and personal attacks against cultural leaders risk undermining the dignity and respect associated with his institution.

Mzee Nelson Abor leaves behind a wife, children and grandchildren. He died on August 25, 2026.
