Three health officials working at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital (HRRH) were arrested on July 31 by Hoima Central Police personnel for extorting money from a patient who had gone to seek health services.
It was reported that the three allegedly extorted shs310,000 from a parent who had moved to the facility seeking a CT scan service on her child on Friday afternoon.
According to Hoima Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Hajji Badru Mugabi, the suspects were found in position of the shs310,000 before a patient could be taken to the laboratory.
“They got shs310,000 from this patient who had brought her critically ill child. They started by extorting shs10,000 outside the laboratory before the laboratory operator also extorted for his labour,” Mugabi said
Mugabi added: “When they extorted from her without giving a receipt, she contacted my office for help.”
RCC Mugabi said the crime sparked his attention to push for security intervention which managed to arrest and also recover the extorted amount from the corrupt officials.
He condemned the act, saying it is contrary to the government’s mission to ensure a corruption-free environment in all public service delivery points.
Meanwhile, the identities of the suspects were not disclosed by the officials, but tndNews, Uganda, is making an effort to identify them.
